Challenge

In order to train the eye and learn the technical precision of typesetting, students were to create a type specimen box based on antique type specimens and the exercises of typographic masters such as Wolfgang Weingart and Emil Ruder.

Strategy

After choosing a typeface to work with, I recreated antique specimen sheets and classic typography exercises by measuring xeroxed copies to nearest point. Professor Jennifer Sterling ensured that our work was precise by comparing my recreations to the originals, encouraging me to finesse them until they were mathematically perfect replicas.

Results

The resulting type specimen box is not only a compelling artifact, but also a visual representation of my growth as a designer. By first recreating the works of the masters and then designing my own visual exercises, I developed a keen understanding of the subtle nuances of type, as well as a great appreciation for the art of typography.
